The Acai LegendThe acai legend is about an Amazon Indian tribes struggle to survive with a shortage of food and a large number of tribe members to feed. The tribal chief at the time named Itaki, demanded that all newborn children would be sacrificed. And when Iaca, his own daughter fell pregnant and gave birth the chief had his orders carried out, Iaca's baby was sacrificed. Iaca mourned her baby's death alone in her hut for days, until one evening in a full moon night she thought she heard a baby crying. When she when outside in search of the baby she saw what she believed to be her little baby lying under neath a beautiful palm tree. She ran to her baby and held it tightly. The tribe went out in search of Iaca and found her dead. Her body was holding the Acai tree with a smile on her face. Mysteriously her baby had disappeared. Iaca eyes were staring at the top of the Acai palm tree, which gave birth to the dark purple palm berry fruits. Itaki after realising what his daughter had been looking at demanded all the Indian to get the fruits. The tree’s fruit satisfied their hunger and renewed their energy. In tribute to his daughter the chief named the fruit Acai (Iaca’s name spelled backwards). The chief suspended the order to sacrifice the children and with abundant
food for all, the tribe grew and flourished. If you travel to the Amazon you are
sure to hear the Acai legend talked about.
